What to do if Your Roof Starts Leaking

March 3, 2020

Your roof has started leaking…now what!?  The following are some tips on what you can do if you roof springs a leak.

Limit The Water Damage
Water leaking into your home is going to cause damage to your ceilings and walls, flooring, electronics, furniture and personal belongings.  If you can’t move your belongings to a different location, cover everything you can with plastic like a tarp or vapour barrier.

Catch the Water
Place buckets or pots under the dripping water to catch as much of it as you can.  Surround each bucket with a towel or rag to absorb the water that splashes onto the floor.  If you notice that your paint in the ceiling is bubbling, it’s likely holding water.  Take something sharp and carefully puncture the paint so the water will drop down into a bucket below.

Get Rid of the Water
Once the water stops dripping, you want to clean it all up and make sure everything dries as soon as possible.  You don’t want mold to start to grow.  If your carpet got wet, pull it up and away from the wall and separate it from the padding below it so it can all be exposed to air and dry.

Call your Insurance Company about Water Damage Caused from Your Leaking Roof
It’s important to call your insurance company as soon as possible if your home has sustained a lot of damage.  Your insurance may not cover the damage from your leaky roof, but it’s important to speak with your insurance agent to see what is and isn’t covered.

Fix Your Roof
Call a licensed roofing contractor and have them come and assess your roof and give you a quote on repair or replacement.  It’s important to do this right away, because you don’t want to get caught in another rain storm and cause further damage to your home.
